Wireless earphones have suddenly become one of the fastest-growing segments in gadgets and it seems like serious audiophile brand HiFiMAN doesn’t want to be left behind. The company is known for making high-grade wired audio products that are good for various purposes such as studio monitoring, DJing and casual listening. HiFiMAN recently launched the TWS 600 in India and we’ve been using it for a few weeks to find out if it is actually any good. Sure, it’s no AirPods killer but it can be a good option for people looking for an alternative.
When it comes to truly wireless earphones, there are three factors that matter the most – design, comfort and sound quality. The HiFiMAN TWS 600 does not have a conventional earbud design that you may have seen before. It is unusual, bulky and a little weird looking. Both earbuds have a physical button that also houses LED lights that work as status indicators. The design choice is certainly bold, and is unique enough to stand out from rest of the wireless earphones you will come across.
The one thing we absolutely did not like was the charging case of the wireless earbuds. It is jarring to look at due to the colour scheme being used. The logo placement also feels out of place and has not been placed symmetrically. Every time we looked at the charging case, we felt like moving the asymmetrical logo to the left and shrink it in size. Of course, that is our personal choice but we can see why it may appeal to some people. The charging case has a USB-C, while the closing mechanism has two magnetic flaps. These flaps make it a bit hard to open the case and cannot be opened using just one hand. However, once you get the hang of it you will not face any major issues.
In terms of comfort, the HiFiMAN TWS 600 comes with numerous ear tips of different sizes and designs. You will need to pick out the best fit according to your ear canal. We usually use the biggest tip there is as it helps in isolating ambient sound. The HiFiMAN TWS 600 is also IPX4 certified which means you can use them at the gym or when out for a run. They are water and sweat resistant and will not falter with minor water damage.
The weird design choice on the HiFiMAN TWS 600 also works in its favour as it has no sharp edges to cause discomfort. You can wear these for hours without feeling any fatigue.
Before we get into the sound quality of the HiFiMAN TWS 600, it is worth mentioning that these earbuds do not offer support for aptX or LDC codecs. It has AAC and SBC support, the standard for lossy digital audio compression.
Having said that, the sound quality is still not as bad as we expected it to be on paper. The Soundstage makes you feel closer to the music and you can clearly hear the instruments as if you were next to them. Having said that, we did feel that the HiFiMAN TWS 600 tuning was a bit off as the highs and mids were all over the place. Sometimes it would sound great with vocal tracks as there is more emphasis on the higher mid-range frequency. However, if you prefer to listen to electronica or instrumental music, the experience can be inconsistent.
The lower frequencies are better to listen to if you know what you are doing. We suggest using a custom music player on your device that lets you adjust the frequencies. You will need to equalise the upper midrange and highs to get the ideal bass performance. Don’t expect the lower frequencies to hit the lowest notes as the signal is not coming from a wire. For a Bluetooth earbud, the HiFiMAN TWS 600 does more than fair in the lower frequencies.
The highs or treble in layman terms is not as sharp as it can get on Bluetooth earphones. However, you will still need to adjust it according to your own liking, depending on the genre you like listening to. The highs do have good detail and are good enough for a Bluetooth earbud. We did not expect to hear every single detail in a song, however it suffices the need of a casual listener.
On a single charge, the HiFiMAN TWS 600 can last up to 5.5 hours. However, at higher volumes, you can expect it to dip down to 4.5 hours. That’s quite impressive, considering how other TWS earphones perform in this category. The charging case, on the other hand, can bring up the total battery life up to 38.5 hours with a total charge cycle of seven times.
The Final Say
For Rs 12,999 the HiFiMAN TWS 600 becomes an extremely recommendable pair of wireless earbuds, thanks to its competition. If you are looking for Bluetooth earphones that can last up to 30+ hours, the HiFiMAN TWS 600 makes sense for you.
